According to Aboluwarin Abiodun Precious, the top graduating student in the College of Social and Management Sciences 2023–2024 session, achieving academic excellence is no small feat. In an interview with Esther Akintewe, the young economist with a 4.97 CGPA discussed his experiences, challenges, and motivations that led to his exceptional academic achievement.
Please can you introduce yourself?
My name is Aboluwarin Abiodun Precious, a graduating student from the Department of Economics in the College of Social and Management Sciences.
Has your academic life ever affected your social life? This question arises from the general perception of you that you are a “Bookworm” who hardly socializes with other students.
Some people see me as that kind of over-serious person who is not easy-going. I don’t know why they perceive me as such, but I don’t believe that one has to read all the time. You have to play as well. I don’t have a lot of friends but one good friend who actually offers me useful advices while he also benefits such from me.
What are your future academic or professional plans?
I look forward to working in organisations like Central Bank of Nigeria that focuses on economic development where decisions about national development are being taken with contributions from everyone involved. I want to be part of those giving governments expertise advice on economic development.
What are the factors that motivated you to having good grades?
For me it’s the fear of mockery and humiliation. I have a record of excellent results from day one so that pushes me to always do well in order to avoid people making jest of me if I failed. And from the family I come from as well, I know I have to make them proud, they have sacrificed a lot to get me into this school and the only way I can repay them is having a good result.
Final question, is there anybody in your department maybe a lecturer or a student or a senior colleague that has been your motivation or your mentor throughout your studies.
My lecturer, Mr. Sanmi is one of my inspirators, I love that man so much. Infact, he has been a great motivation to me since my 100 level days. Mr. Sanmi can give you a 10 page note without looking at any textbook, ask question, Mr. Sanmi has an answer for you.
