ACHIEVERS UNIVERSITY HOSTS STRATEGIC COUNCIL/MANAGEMENT RETREAT TO POSITION FOR 21ST CENTURY RELEVANCE IN THE HIGHER EDUCATION LANDSCAPE

In a bold step towards institutional transformation and strategic advancement, Achievers University, Owo, held a one-day Council/Management Retreat on Saturday, 17th May 2025 at the Professor Isa Ali Ibrahim (PANTAMI) CBT Hall within the University. Themed “Positioning Achievers University for Competitive Edge in the 21st Century,” the retreat marked a key milestone following the inauguration of the University’s 4th Governing Council.

The retreat brought together members of the newly inaugurated 4th Governing Council, principal officers, and the University’s management team, including Provost, Deans, Heads of Departments, Directorates, and Units, for a day of robust intellectual exchange and strategic alignment.

Setting the tone for the day, Hon. Dr. Bode Ayorinde, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, delivered the opening paper titled “Achievers University – Ownership Structure, Aims and Aspirations.” In his presentation, he revisited the visionary foundation upon which Achievers University was established, emphasizing the uniqueness of its private-public operational model. He outlined a clear mandate for the Council and Management through his “13 Dreams”, alongside the University’s vision and mission, challenging stakeholders to “achieve one dream at a time.” While acknowledging that the task ahead is enormous and daunting, he assured that it is not insurmountable. Hon. Dr. Ayorinde urged every member to play their role diligently and sincerely.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Omolola Irinoye, followed with the second paper, “17 Years of Achievers University: So Far, So Good.” Her presentation provided a reflective assessment of the institution’s journey since inception in 2008. She highlighted key achievements in academic growth, infrastructural development, research initiatives, accreditation successes, and student enrolment milestones. She acknowledged past and present stakeholders whose sacrifices and contributions have kept the vision alive. She also identified areas needing improvement to accelerate the University’s vision of becoming a global player in tertiary education.

The third paper, titled “Strategic Imperatives for Achieving a 21st Century Frontline University Status,” was presented by Professor Oyesoji Aremu, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor. Professor Aremu outlined a roadmap for repositioning the University to meet contemporary global standards in education. His presentation addressed issues such as digital transformation, research innovation, staff development, internationalization, funding diversification, and improved student experience.

The final presentation was delivered by Professor Ademola Popoola, who spoke on “University Management Structure: The Roles of the Governing Council.” Professor Popoola provided clarity on the strategic and oversight responsibilities of the Governing Council in university governance. He emphasized synergy between Council and Management, highlighting the importance of shared vision, effective policy direction, and adherence to regulatory frameworks in driving institutional excellence.

The interactive sessions that followed allowed participants to engage meaningfully with the content of the presentations, generating insights and strategies aimed at accelerating the University’s aspirations for global competitiveness.

In her closing remarks, Professor Irinoye commended the Governing Council for its proactive engagement and affirmed the management’s readiness to drive reforms and innovations that would reposition Achievers University as a frontline academic institution in Nigeria and beyond.

The event also featured a special celebration of Mr. Uwon Eze, JP, in honour of his birthday. He was commended for his selflessness, strong sense of responsibility, and the high level of importance he attached to the University and its defining moments, choosing to fully participate even though it was his special day.
