Achievers University, Owo, has reinforced its commitment to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education by hosting no fewer than 120 students from 10 secondary schools within Owo and its environs for the 2026 World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development on Tuesday, 10th March, 2026 at the Prof. Abubakar Adamu Rasheed Auditorium.
The outreach programme, organized by the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering (EIE) under the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, aligns with the global observance of World Engineering Day on March 4 — an initiative championed by UNESCO to highlight the role of engineering in advancing sustainable development, particularly within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Participating schools, including Imade College, Ijebu Community Grammar School, Leadership Academy, Adeyeri Iyere Comprehensive High School, Living Spring International School, Corpus Christi Catholic College, Owo, Ebenezer International School, Radiant Intellectual College, Foremost Citizens’ Schools, and Adedewe College, were accompanied by their teachers for a day of immersive learning, career engagement, and exposure to modern engineering practices.

Welcoming the participants, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oyesoji Aremu, emphasized the importance of early career awareness in building a strong STEM pipeline. He challenged the students to begin defining their aspirations early, noting that clarity of purpose is critical to achieving long-term success.
“You are not too young to shape your future,” he said. “Engineering is about solving real-world problems, and that journey begins with curiosity, discipline, and informed choices.”
He commended the Faculty of Engineering and Technology for sustaining initiatives that bridge the gap between secondary and tertiary education, describing the event as a strategic contribution to national development and global competitiveness.

In his remarks, the Dean of the Faculty, Professor Ayodele Onawumi, expressed appreciation to the University Management for its continued investment in academic infrastructure and programme development. He noted that the faculty remains committed to producing graduates equipped with the skills and innovation required to thrive in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.

Delivering a keynote session titled Engineering Careers for Sustainable Development, the Head of the Department (EIE) and convener of the programme, Dr. Babatunde Emmanuel, highlighted emerging opportunities in engineering fields such as renewable energy, digital systems, and smart infrastructure. He encouraged the students to align their interests with areas that address pressing global challenges. He further noted that the Faculty of Engineering and Technology at Achievers University comprises six departments: Biomedical Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical and Information Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Mechatronics Engineering. He added that students in these programmes benefit from substantial tuition support, with scholarships covering between 65% and 100% of school fees.
A key highlight of the event was a guided tour of the Faculty’s laboratories and facilities, where students engaged with modern equipment and observed practical demonstrations. The experience provided valuable insight into engineering education and research, further stimulating their interest in STEM disciplines.
Teachers who accompanied the students described the initiative as impactful and timely, noting that early exposure to university environments plays a crucial role in shaping informed career decisions and boosting students’ confidence.
The 2026 World Engineering Day outreach reflects Achievers University’s broader strategy to deepen STEM advocacy, promote experiential learning, and strengthen its contribution to global education and sustainable development.
