When alumni of the great University of Ibadan gather, history is never far from the room. That sense of legacy took centre stage as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Achievers University, Prof. Olabode Ayorinde, was honoured with a Distinguished Alumni Award by the Ondo State Branch of the University of Ibadan Alumni Association (UIAA) on Friday, 27th February, 2026.
In a moment that symbolically fused recognition with responsibility, Prof. Ayorinde received the prestigious award at the 2026 Basorun Seinde Arogbofa (OFR, MDA)/Ondo UIAA Alumni Lecture and Awards, held at the Prof. T. I. Francis Auditorium, Federal University of Technology, Akure. He also served as Chairman of the Occasion, a role that underscored the high regard in which he is held by his alma mater and the wider academic community.
A distinguished alumnus of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Ayorinde is a trained legal scholar and seasoned academic administrator whose career spans law, public service, and university governance. Over the years, he has founded and supported educational institutions across multiple levels — from primary and secondary schools to tertiary education — creating structured pathways for learning and personal advancement.
As Founder of Achievers University, Owo, Prof. Ayorinde has been defined by a deep commitment to expanding access to quality education, particularly for his deliberate efforts to democratise access to higher education. Through sustained scholarship schemes and student-support initiatives, the university has enabled talented students across the social strata to pursue university education, reinforcing the principle that social status should not be a barrier to opportunity. These interventions have positioned Achievers University as a model of community-responsive private higher education in Nigeria.
Beyond access, Prof. Ayorinde’s educational establishments have contributed significantly to human capital development and job creation, providing employment opportunities for academic and non-academic staff while offering platforms for thousands of Nigerians to realise their aspirations. His leadership philosophy emphasises quality assurance, ethical governance, and institutional sustainability, values that continue to shape Achievers University’s growth and reputation.
Speaking on the event, the iconic Bashorun Seinde Arogbofa (OFR, MDA), on whose legacy the annual event is anchored, reflected on the historic role of the University of Ibadan as Nigeria’s premier university and a major incubator of the nation’s human capital. He described Ondo State as “a fertile womb” that has produced generations of UI alumni who have distinguished themselves across governance, finance, the military, academia, and other strategic sectors of the economy within the state and beyond. According to him, the strength of UI’s alumni network lies not merely in numbers, but in its sustained engagement with national challenges and its readiness to provide ideas, leadership, and solutions. This philosophy, he noted, explains the continued relevance of the UIAA lecture series as a platform for reflection, dialogue, and policy-oriented conversations.
The ceremony also featured two major intellectual engagements. The keynote address on the “Blue Economy” was delivered by Prof. Temi Ologunorisa, Vice-Chancellor of Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupo, Ondo State who highlighted opportunities for sustainable national growth through the responsible development of marine and coastal resources. The second lecture, “Breaking the Chains: Strengthening Institutions for Transparency and Progress,” was presented by Most Rev. Williams Olu Aladekugbe, Bishop of Ibadan North Diocese and Archbishop of Ibadan Province of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, who underscored accountability, transparency, and ethical leadership as pillars of national advancement.
Amongst other notable alumni and dignitaries at the event included the former Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly and currently Olukoju of Odooko-Afa, Oke-Agbe Akoko, Rt. Hon. Bakkita Bello; the Vice-Chancellor of the FUTA, Prof. Temidayo Oladiji; and the global leader of the UIAA, Surv. Thomas Dabiri, fnis.
The UIAA Distinguished Alumni Award is among the association’s highest honours, reserved for graduates whose lives exemplify service, excellence, and lasting societal impact. For Prof. Olabode Ayorinde, the recognition affirms a lifelong dedication to education as a tool for empowerment, institution-building, and public good, while reinforcing the enduring bond between the University of Ibadan and its alumni in shaping Nigeria’s development narrative.
