Microsorum pteropus ‘Petite’, more commonly known as Java Fern Petite, is a smaller, compact form of the classic Java Fern. It features slightly wavy, narrow leaves that give it a softer look compared to other slender varieties like Narrow Leaf.
Recently reclassified as Leptochilus pteropus, this plant is still widely known in the aquarium hobby as Microsorum pteropus. Like other Java Fern varieties, it is hardy, easy to care for, and well suited for aquarists of all skill levels.
Its smaller size makes it especially useful for nano aquariums, where it can be used as a main plant, or as a detailed accent in larger planted tanks. Java Fern Petite is great for filling in open spaces and adds a natural, layered look to aquascapes.
As an epiphytic plant, it can be attached to driftwood, rocks, or aquarium decor using thread or glue. Be sure to keep the rhizome above the substrate to prevent rot. Propagation is simple—just divide the rhizome and reattach as needed.
