“Mechatronics Engineering” May be defined as follows:
“The Synergistic Combination of Precision mechanical engineering; electronic control and systems thinking in the design of Products and Manufacturing Processes.”
“Integration of Electronics; Control engineering and Mechanical Engineering.”
“The interdisciplinary field of Engineering dealing with the design of products whose function Relies on the synergistic integration of mechanical and electronic components Coordinated by a Control architecture.”

“ Mechatronics” Involves a number of technologies such as:

  1. Mechanical Engineering
  2. Electronic Engineering
  3. Electrical Engineering
  4. Computer Engineering
  5. Control Engineering
This can be considered to be the application of computer- based digital control techniques through electronic and electric interfaces to Mechanical Problems.

The word “Mechatronics” was coined in Japan in the late sixties; spread through Europe and is now being commonly used elsewhere in the world. Achievers University Owo; Ondo State inclusive.
Knowledge of Higher Mathematics; Physics; Chemistry; Engineering Graphics and Fluid Mechanics; Thermodynamics; Material Science; Mechanics of Machines; and Computer and Control Engineering is Required to be a good Mechatronics Engineer’s.

Brief Description of some Mechatronics System

Engine of a Motor- Car Management

Be it fuel or diesel Engine OR Ignition Engine it Runs on Cam Mechanism; Valve; Plugs etc i.e. the system Runs’ on suction stroke; Compression Stroke; Power Stroke; Exhaust Stroke (See Figure 1)below

The power and speed of the engine are controlled by varying

  1. Ignition Timing.
  2. Air- fuel Mixture.
In a modern car the above mentioned operations are carried out through Microprocessor. See Figure 2 Below.

For any Mechatronics system the design process can be considered as involving the following step/stages.

  1. To ascertain the need from; perhaps Customer OR a Client, OR Market Research.
  2. To find out the true nature of the problem.
  3. To analyze the product design and prepare develop specification with his OR her knowledge of Engineering Graphics OR Drawing.
  4. To select process variables; set point; processes; etc.
  5. To design proper analog and digital Circuits.
  6. To select Mechanical Components and devices.
  7. To design proper Mechanical Systems Like hydraulic; pneumatic; etc.
  8. To select sensor; actuators; and control components.
  9. To develop computer based system.
  10. To develop necessary computer software and database.
  11. To monitor the performance of the designed system.
