ACHIEVERS UNIVERSITY COUNSELLING UNIT ORGANISES SEMINAR ON EFFECTIVE STUDY HABITS FOR 100-LEVEL STUDENTS

The Prof. Abubakar Adamu Auditorium at Achievers University was filled to capacity as eager 100-level students attended an enlightening seminar titled “Understanding and Cultivating Effective Study Habits as a Catalyst for Achieving Academic Performance among 100 level Students” on Wednesday, February 5, 2025. Organized by the Counselling Unit of the Directorate of Student Affairs, the session provided valuable insights and strategies to help fresh students navigate the academic demands of university life.

In his opening remarks, the Dean of Students, Dr. Ojeme Samuel, who was represented by the Sub-Dean, Dr David Ibiyemi emphasized the importance of adapting to the realities of higher education. He noted that many fresh students struggle with academic freedom, self-discipline, and effective study habits. He noted that the seminar was organised to create awareness of these challenges, educate students on making informed decisions, and instill ethical academic values that will enhance their success.

The event featured three distinguished counsellors from Achievers University who addressed critical aspects of academic success. The first speaker, the Dean of the Faculty of Education and Director of Academic Planning and Quality Assurance, Professor Taiwo Adenegan, delivered a lecture on “Ethical Values That Are Beneficial Before, During, and After tests/Examination.” He highlighted the significance of academic integrity, adherence to the university’s code of conduct, and the long-term benefits of ethical study practices. Warning against examination malpractice, he stressed that maintaining credibility in one’s academic journey translates to future career success. “The habits you cultivate today will determine your achievements tomorrow. Stay focused, disciplined, and committed to excellence,” he advised.

Dr. Oladayo Ibitoye, a lecturer in the Department of Education Foundations and Counselling, spoke on “Overcoming Tests/Examinations Anxiety with Mastering of Common Tests/Examination Terms.” He reassured students that test anxiety is a common challenge but can be mitigated through proper preparation, relaxation techniques, and positive mental conditioning. He encouraged students to prioritize rest, nutrition, positive affirmations, and seeking guidance from lecturers and professional counsellors to combat stress and anxiety. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of understanding examination terminologies to improve performance and reduce confusion during tests and exams.

The third speaker, Dr. Boye Owele, Deputy Chief Guidance Counsellor in the Directorate of Student Affairs, addressed “Steps to Improving Study Habits among Students.”  She outlined key strategies such as time management, note-taking skills, active learning techniques, and goal-setting to enhance retention and comprehension. Speaking further on Effective Study Strategies, Dr Owele noted that students should differentiate between various subject areas, use detailed explanations in exams, and actively engage with learning materials. She urged the students to establish a structured study routine, avoid last-minute preparations, set realistic goals, and stay motivated in their academic pursuits.

In his closing remarks, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oyesoji Aremu, represented by Professor Adenegan, reinforced the importance of self-discipline, hard work, and resilience in academic pursuits. “Education is not just about passing exams; it is about understanding, applying knowledge, and developing a mindset that will serve you beyond the university walls,” he remarked.

Students expressed gratitude for the timely intervention, with many noting that the seminar provided clarity on effective study techniques, time management, and strategies to approach exams with confidence.

Appreciating the university management for its unwavering support and the facilitators for their insightful lectures, the Sub-Dean of the Directorate of Student Affairs, Dr. David Ibiyemi, reaffirmed the Directorate’s commitment to supporting students both academically and morally throughout their university journey. He noted that plans are underway for more workshops and mentorship programs to further equip students with essential life and study skills. He added that with examinations fast approaching, the counselling session proved to be a timely and impactful initiative, providing students with practical tools to achieve academic excellence at Achievers University.
