Description

Our general philosophy and objectives include the production, training and retraining of mass communicators and professionals who combine theoretical knowledge with a reasonable measure of practical skills using suitable technology. Such professionals will include journalists; broadcasters; book developers and publishers; development communicators in the organizational, religious and science and technology areas; public relations or public affairs specialists; advertising practitioners; communication researchers and developers, communication policy engineers, and trainers in the increasingly popular areas of speech, reading and writing as communication.

The Degree programme in Mass Communication also has the following objectives:

  • To train and/or retain Nigerian journalists, broadcasters, public relations and advertising practitioners for leadership positions in the mass media organizations in Nigeria and the world.
  • To provide our students with the opportunity to master the art of communicating with the masses that transcends all disciplines, whether in writing or broadcasting.
  • To train students of Mass Communication to act as trustees of the public trust, and be socially responsible to the communities they serve by being accurate, fair, balanced and objective in their reportage of societal issues.
  • To produce Nigerian Mass Communicators who will continue to protect the basic principles of the PEOPLE‚ÄôS RIGHT TO KNOW as the fourth branch of government or the Fourth Estate of the Realm; and to equip our Mass Communication graduate with adequate skills to establish his/her own magazines, public relations and advertising agencies, or even his/her own radio and/or television stations.

There is a wide spectrum of occupational choices for students in Mass Communication to acquire resources for practice in print and electronic media, to become: News Reporters and Correspondents for Print and Electronic Media, Film Producers and Film Production Directors, Radio and Television Producers, Presenters and Announcers, Book Publisher and Editors in Publishing Houses, Public Affairs Managers, Client Service Executives and Brand Managers in Advertising Agencies, and Online Content Administrators.
